Annika was born on October 11, 1979 to Lucas and Lydia Brown at St. Vincent's Manhattan Hospital. She has an older brother named Elliot, who is older than her by seven years.

She was accepted into Marymount School of New York at age five and spent her entire elementary and high school career there and attended Church of Saint Francis Xavier when growing up but Annika is now a lapsed Catholic due to circumstances later in her life. While at Marymount, she got the reputation of being considerably smart and someone one would go to in times of trouble.

She graduated third out of one hundred and twenty five from Marymount and attended New York University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

When Annika was six months old, the Burroughs family moved into the house across the street from the Brown family. A friendship was struck between the matriarchs and a friendship between the daughters quickly followed.

Two months after Annika's fifteenth birthday, tragedy rocked the Brown family. Lucas and Lydia were killed in a plane crash. Since Annika was still a minor and under the age of eighteen, legal guardianship was originally granted to Daria and Brennan Novak. However, the three did not get along which prompted Elliot to apply for custody of Annika. After a severely fought and drawn out battle in Family Court, custody was granted to Elliot. Even though with the tensions and battles that were brought on by Annika's age and normal sibling fighting, the guardianship brought the brother and sister to have an extremely close relationship.

Upon graduating college, Annika applied for a job as a secretary for Taylor Harper at Citi-Habitats, a realtor in the city. If Santa Claus existed and worked as a realtor, Taylor would have been it. Unfortunately, Taylor was diagnosed with brain cancer three years later and decided to retire. Eight months after his diagnosis, he died.

Unfortunately for Annika this meant that she was out of a job, but a new friend was about to change her life. Jenna Potter told Annika that the head of the company where she worked was looking for a new assistant as his old one, Elle Woods, was following her husband to Germany where he was being deployed. After two highly intense interviews with Elle (who couldn't have been sweeter as she was grilling Annika) and Alex Howell, she received the job at Howell-Lennox.

And the rest as they say is history.

Relationships
Elliot Brown: Annika's brother. She absolutely adores Elliot. The death of their parents brought an end to their squabbling (for the most part) and today the two share an extremely close relationship.

Hannah Brown: Annika's sister-in-law. The two get along famously and Annika believes that Hannah's one of the best things to happen to Elliot.

Chelsea and Elyse Brown: These two are Annika's nieces and she loves them to bits and pieces. They say that Auntie Annie is their favorite babysitter.

Rachel Potter: Annika considers Rachel to be the sister she never had. Because even though Rachel does ignore everyone when she's finding out a story or pushing a deadline or letting her reporter instincts get in the way of tack, one couldn't ask for a better friend.

Jenna Potter: Annika's other best friend and fellow coworker at Howell-Lennox. The self proclaimed gossip at the office, Jenna and Annika met a singles' Valentine's Day party and it was Jenna who told her about the job at Howell-Lennox.

Alex Howell: Annika's boss. Her relationship with him sometimes changes on a daily basis and sometimes on an hourly basis. There are times when she considered putting poison in his coffee or in his whiskey decanter. But there are other times when she would do anything for him.
